Our Kiwi Information Reports

We have taken 3 exceptional kiwi information reports from our class and posted them on our blog. First we  made a cross classification chart. Then we sorted the information into paragraphs and made a draft. After that we typed them and stapled them into flap charts.

Diana, Blake and Jordan's Information Report

The Kiwi is a native bird to New Zealand.  The bird is more like a mammal but it is still a bird.  The female is the boss!  when sleeping it likes to tuck its beak under its wing .
Brown shaggy feathers cover its small fat body.  Like no other bird in the world,it has a long beak with nostrils at the tip!  It has cat like whiskers at the base of it’s bill.  On it’s short strong feet it has razor sharp claws.  Tiny wing stumps are where the wings used to be.
The kiwi lays 1 to 3 eggs which are the largest eggs in relation to its size.  The male does antics to attract it’s mate.  It’s the only bird to mate for life.  A kiwi incubates in winter.  When incubating , it likes to keep it’s feathers damp!  The kiwi can live to 40!
The kiwi lives in the New Zealand bush or forest.  Kiwi live in the North, South and Stewart Islands.  They have many burrows which can be 70 centimetres  long and 20 centimetres wide.

The kiwi looks so cute and you’d think it couldn’t hurt you. But it can! The kiwi has sharp claws. Its a good fighter it kicks ,spits and hisses to scare of their predators.
Kiwis are as special as you so please look after them.

                                                             THE KIWI
The kiwi is a native bird to New Zealand and is nocturnal. It belongs to the Ratite family (like the emu).
Kiwi have big shaggy feathers so it can not fly. It has a long beak with nostrils at the end. If there’s someone chasing after them, they’ll stop and stick their beak up in the air(They’re the only bird that does this.)  Kiwi are brown and have a round body so when the eggs are in their body they can fit.  Did you know  they have stumps under their wings from where they used to fly?  The kiwi has razor sharp claws and short, strong legs.
The kiwi lives in the New Zealand bush in a burrow. It lives in the North Island,South Island and Stewart Island. The burrows are 70 centimetres long and 20 centimetres wide.
The Kiwi eats snails, worms, spiders ,beetles, lava, weta, cockroaches, grubs and berries. The Kiwi can run fast and they can hear each other call from a mile away from each other.   Did you know that Kiwi love water?  They get the water in their beak and pour it over themselves and get washed.
So look after the Kiwi and save our native bird from extinction.

                                           The Kiwi
The Kiwi is a native bird of New Zealand and also is part of the ratite family. Kiwi are nocturnal which means they go out at night and they’re also flightless which means they can’t fly.
They are covered with feathers all over them and you guys might think that kiwi fight with their beak. Well you are wrong, kiwi use razor-sharp claws to fight off predators. Kiwi have nostrils on tip of their beak, so they don’t fight with them. They have legs that are so powerful they can run pretty fast.  Kiwi don’t have very good eye-sight but they have a very good sense of smell so they know when predators are about to attack.
They live in the New Zealand bush and forest and they can have more than one burrow which go up to seventy centimeters long and thirty centimeters wide.
The Kiwi has one of the largest eggs compared to their body size in the world and lay from one to three eggs in winter. The male does all the incubating while the female hunts  for food.  The male does some antics which means tricks like turning flips to attract the female. The babies hatch over three days and the female and the male live together for life.
Kiwi eat mostly snails, worms, spiders, beetles, larva, weta, cockroaches, grubs and berries.
Kiwi like water and they can swim pretty darn good. They use their bill to put water into their bed so they can keep damp for the night. They like to be damp so when they hop into the water it doesn’t really matter if they get wet.
Predators to a kiwi are stoats, weasels, ferrets, rats, people, cats, dogs and possums. These all have the power to strike at a kiwi. Some predators can eat a kiwi in one bite. People started to bring predators into New Zealand so people are also counted as a predator.
Now  people care about them so come on New Zealand, help save the kiwi, our native bird.

Room 6's Brilliant Learning on PhotoPeach

Printing

Room 6 has been working on prints. We used crayon, pastel and ink. First we made a design in our sketch book. Then we cut out the shapes and glued them onto a base making sure that they were a minute space apart. Then we either rolled ink across the base and projected it on paper or rubbed crayon across a piece of paper on our base.

Room 6 Jandle Art

Room 6 made some awesome jandal art!
We made our jandals because we wanted to focus on kiwiana. We made a little plan and it lead us to these amazing pieces of art. We used paper , pastels , paint and corrugated cardboard and they turned out like this!
